ocean blessings : my creative journey

Visiting the Great Ocean Road had been on my bucket list since I was a teenager, back when I was crushing hard on Keanu Reeves and watching Point Break on repeat. (Only recently did I find out that the final scene of the movie, set at Bells Beach, wasn't actually filmed there at all, but in the USA.  What?! ☹)

A few months ago, more than 30 years later, I finally made it to Bells Beach enroute to a retreat near Apollo Bay.  Some dreams take their time.

Some places live up to the dreams you have of them.  The Great Ocean Road WOWed me beyond my dreams.

It isn’t just a scenic drive, it is a like a pilgrimage through one of nature’s masterpieces.  Around every bend is a stop-your-breath landscape of raw rugged cliffs meeting the raw wild ocean.  Countless beauty-full views are stitched together by the winding road.  And driving that road feels like you are driving the edge of the world!

The vision for a macrame piece named ocean blessings came to me whilst walking the beach at Wye River.  The perfect piece of driftwood found itself on my path;  I remembered that I had some ocean-blue recycled cotton cord at home waiting to become a macrame piece; and I envisioned weaving into the piece some sweet tiny shells my sons fossicked on a beach near our past home in Queensland.  My boys had imagined the shells were horns from miniature unicorns!

Whilst creating ocean blessings I continually anointed myself with saltwater I had collected from the ocean near Apollo Bay.  I felt the ocean with me, in me.  Blessings from the ocean, woven into every knot.

May ocean blessings, carrying the spirit of the sea, remind you that just as the ocean's waves constantly return to the shore again and again, you are always returning to yourSelf.

love,
Katrina
